Their shape and weight. Throwing knives have their weight focused mostly in the blade, which affects how they travel through the air when thrown. A dart has a more uniform weight, which means you can't throw it the same way.

[He picks up one of the darts not being used and tests its weights and flips it in his hand a few times before holding it in the way he would to throw it, showing Lily] You have to aim them in a different manner than a knife, since they're generally lighter and easier for the wind to throw off if you treat them like a knife.

Does wind make that big a difference?

Depends how strong it is. A light wind generally wont, but a stronger one can stop a dart reaching its target at all.

[He aims at one of the nearer targets and throws the dart he's holding. It doesn't hit one of the balloons, but it lands pretty solidly in the board. He didn't want to pop one of the balloons when he's mostly here right now to help]
