The Beach

Every morning, without fail, Lin spent an hour or two in the relative privacy of the beach, practicing. She wasn't technically a monk anymore, but the habits ingrained in her at the temple wouldn't easily go, and anyways her skills were useful in a violent world. This world wasn't that violent, as far as she could tell, but she persisted. She didn't want to get rusty was all.

The Soaring Fist style was an ancient martial arts technique that took the philosophy of a thunderstorm. Its practicioners seemed to almost float around attacks like a cloud, and then strike as fast and hard as a lightning bolt. If they were advanced students, as Lin was, that became a bit more literal. When she jumped, she floated higher into the air than made logical sense, like she was drifting on the breeze rather than just jumping. When she struck, you could sometimes actually see flickers of lightning crackling off her body.

She doesn't seem to have noticed she has an audience as she jumps and kicks and punches her way through various forms on the beach.

Residential Level

If you're on the 20s floor of the residential section this afternoon, you can hear twangy country music about (The track list of this album includes song titles like "Red neck, White Truck, and Blue Jeans") coming from the open door of room 26. Within, Lin hummed along to the music as she took the pile of kitschy crap she had gotten from the androids and thoughtfully arranged it around her room. She had never had this many personal material possessions in her life.

Worthy of note is that when Lin arrived in the dream forest, she was wearing the only clothes she owned, and it had been weeks since she'd had a shower. Bathing is something of a luxury in the post-apocalyptic future, and she had long since stopped noticing her own aura of filth. But now she had regular access to a shower, and she was fully taking advantage of it. As a result, the young woman bouncing around this apartment is almost entirely unrecognizable as the sweaty, dirt smudge survivor of the wastes.

At least she doesn't stink any more. The music is kind of loud, though.

Hot Tub

Lin had had trouble believing that there was a hot tub here, at first. Such things were only available to the most amazingly wealthy and powerful members of society, back home. She'd had to see it before she could really accept its presence. And then, after she'd seen it, she'd had to try it. A few minutes of digging through the pile of communal swimsuits had her decked out in men's swim trunks and a rather modest bikini top, and then she was in.

After a while of just kind of melting into the heat and bubble jets, Lin finally realized someone else had come in. She looked up at you from the water. "Did you know I once broke a man's nose for wasting this much water?" She asked, chuckling at herself, "I'm just as bad as he was now, aren't I?"

Viewing Deck

Lin sat on the edge of the viewing deck, kicking her feet back and forth and apparently unconcerned about the potential drop before her. She had a small notebook in her hand, and was chewing on the end of a pencil thoughtfully as she stared at a list written on it. After a minute, she glanced around to see if anyone else was here. Ah good, there was someone. "Hey, what are some fun things you like to do?"

"Ha, I've always thought the opposite. That we are what we do when our backs are against the wall." Talon let out a little huff of laughter as if he hadn't just said something fairly dark. He takaes a moment to place a few more stickers to the cieling before adding: "Your room's looking pretty good. Find all this in the fissure or did the androids hook you up?"

Hey, his room had plenty of character! The bed was unmade, there was a gun on the couch, a creepy mask on the desk, and a pile of clothes in the closet - clean, but unfolded. All the personality of someone who doesn't stay in any one place for very long. Who isn't used to having a home.

"Uh..." Talon stared at the offered stickers a moment before accepting them with a raised brow. "Sure? Thanks. I haven't really gotten around to decorating yet."

He didn't really have any plans to, either, but maybe he should. Some posters, maybe. The christmas lights kinda seemed like a good idea. He liked the light level they produced. Maybe he would ask the androids about it, or keep an eye out in the next fissure.

The CD is, apparently, from some indie band that never progressed beyond the local stage. Loosely hard rock, veering into metal, with an electric violin that's not particularly well-played instead of a lead guitar.

"Good lord." Talon muttered.

"They sure did try something new." Talon noted, eyebrows arching up.

The lyrics weren't much better, relying heavily on abstract poetic lines that didn't always rhyme. Hm. That was. Uh. A song. He wouldn't complain if Bai Lin were to switch it off or change the CD, but he was kind of committed to the mistake now. Instead, he offered a conversational topic.

"You, uh. You listen to a lot of music before you came here?"

There was a distinct sense of relief that came with the quiet "click" of the CD player turning off.

"I was big on that metal-electronica hybrid stuff. Metalstep, I think it's called. Problem was, there wasn't a whole lot of it around to listen to."

Talon crossed his arms, leaning against the wall near the door frame. It wasn't a super popular genre in a commercial world like his.

"Went to a show once, though. At a megaplex. Had a ringing sound in my ears for weeks after that one."

He chuckled, remembering the incident fondly. It was the first and only concert he'd ever been to and he sneaked in, to boot. It was kind of magical.

"Oh, lower tech world?" Talon shrugged. He was getting used to people being kind of confused at this point, he didn't know why he wasn't leading with an explanation all the time. "It's not that important anyway. Bottom line is I like loud music that makes old people cranky."

"You're a monk, though? That's pretty cool. You have magic in your world, too, or like...?"

He knew of approximately one (1) monk-like individual and they could kick his ass sixteen ways from Sunday on a whim. It would be best for him to know ahead of time if this girl could use "mana fist" or "killing hands".

"Former?"

His tone implied curiosity, be he made no attempt to push the subject. If Bai Lin wanted to talk about her potentially troubled past, she would. If not, she was free to change the subject.

"Loud music's where it's at. Fast cars, I could take or leave." Talon laughed, more of a breathy exhale really, and tucked the stickers into one of his many pockets. "I could never be a monk or an adept, man. I don't have the discipline for it. I barely have the discipline to be a shaman."

"...okay that does sound pretty cool." Talon admitted. "I'm from a big city, not a lot of room for cinematic dust plumes."

"But yeah, I'm a Bear shaman. Picked it up a little older than most people do, but stuck with it ever since."

"Heals people. Protects them. Noble stuff for an ex-criminal, I know."

Talon winced at his own words. Ex-criminal. It sounded strange, implied he was definitely leaving that chapter of life behind, but it felt good to say. As long as he was here, he was an ex-criminal.

"We devote ourselves to the Bear totem in exchange for our powers. The only thing He asks is that we follow his guidelines for living - we have to heal people in need, no matter the situation, protect the weak, live as calmly and wisely as we can...stuff like that." He ticked off the points on his fingers as he spoke. "We risk losing our powers if we stray to far from His path. Or worse."

"I'm not so good at the calm and wise part, and the protecting people is something I do sort of shakily, but He's never turned His back on me because I'm honestly trying. And I've never turned my back on Him, either."

"We'll see." He stared at her hand for a moment, unused to physical contact that wasn't meant to harm him. When he looked away, he seemed lost in thought. "Never really asked for the crime life but I sure did embrace it. Think I was kinda bitter at the time. But as long as I'm trying now, right?"

He shook his head a bit. Of course, it mattered where he'd come from, but if he let it be the only thing that mattered, he'd never get anywhere.

"Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, and for listening to me ramble. I'll have to return the favor some day."

"I'll, uh. Take my leave. I've got some redecorating to do, right?" He chuckled, patting the pocket with the stickers in it. "Good luck finding some better tunes. That CD I found was pretty awful."
