This wasn't a one-person job, of course. All the decorating? All the cooking? The cooking of, in fact, some really specific foods? All the figuring out whose birthdays were missed and thus whose to celebrate? It certainly involved getting enough cupcakes with a candle on each one. And Church didn't know how to make poppers for the new year, or Christmas crackers (which seemed like a dumb idea but hey so do a lot of things about Christmas). Mai apparently had the tree thing on lockdown, and moving shit around so there would be space for it all?

A party for all is made by lots of hands helping out to make the missed season bright. And so: winter party a-go-go. Just as he promised/threatened. There's even a karaoke machine set up in one of the corners. God help us all.

[For someone who's not going to recognize most of the holidays or the traditions this party is meant to cover, Regis is sure studying that poor, under-decorated tree hard. Anyone who passes to near him is probably going to notice it's just a touch colder than it is in any other area of the room, and the reason for that temperature drop hovers and rolls calmly above his left hand.

Snowflakes. Icicles. Real ones. Not anything made out of paper or glass.

...Y'know that's why they make fake snow, right? [He's eyeballing that hand.] Unless your magic can make your snow not melt. Which, if that's true, I'm fucking jealous.

It's not that difficult to keep it from melting. I see no puddle forming beneath my hand.

[Which is probably a good thing considering the fact that's his injured hand he's using and soaking the bandages in ice water is very likely high on the list of 'DO NOT DOs' that Strange gave him when releasing him from the medical bay.]

It's a simple matter of control.

Well, yeah, cuz your hand's got the touch and got the power, but when it leaves your hand, doesn't it just act...less magical? Say I shoot an icicle outta my hand. [He fingerguns.] Yeah, it'll stab into someone's chest, but after that, won't it start melting? Like, shooting fire at someone, if they just dump water on it, won't it go out?

...I haven't gotten uh good enough to really experiment that far.

[At first, the only response that Church gets is a very highly hiked eyebrow. Just straight out jumping to murder examples here, are we?]

For my own sanity, I suspect it best I not ask why you went right to such a specific example, however I would like it noted for future reference that I did notice the use of said specific example.

[He closes his hand then and dismisses the ice magic from it. Once all trace of it is gone, he opens his hand again, turning it palm out so he can summon a small shield into the space in front of him.]

Again, it depends on the nature of the spell and the will of the caster. A spell such as this would be of little use if it lost power as soon as my hand pulled away from it.

[And pull away his hand he does, leaving the shimmering shield standing alone. Regis then summons a small ball of fire into his hand, effectively pulling all his attention away from the shield itself.]

Would you like to see how well it stands while my attention is elsewhere?

Hey, the example wasn't specific because it happened or anything! I'm just not sure why else I'd shoot icicles from my fingers. Or, y'know, accidents happen...

[He watches, and, maybe the point should be 'of course he can do lots of shit with magic because it's his family's legacy', but-]

Ah yes, the most wondrous family 'flying' talent. The answer is 'yes' to both.

[He can't help but chuckle.]

It's a skill I've not made much use of since it drains so much energy and with the Wall to power, it was a drain I couldn't afford. I have no doubt he makes it just as dramatic as possible when he uses it too. The drama isn't necessary, for the record. Just encouraged.

Drama is an inherited family trait. Yeah, he said he doesn't do it cuz it wears him out real quick, buuuut now that you don't have a bullshit wall to be a battery for, maybe you can, y'know, nyoom around. Whack people with a cane or something. Fly by whacking.

[Congratulations Church, that is most definitely a snort of amusement that just left Regis, though he does try to muffle it under his hand.]

And then I heard all my ancestors crying out in displeasure at the very idea of the magic being used like that. Honestly, it just makes it more tempting for some reason.

What's the point of having a ring full of dead ghost elders if not to both be way cooler than them and also disappoint-slash-horrify them at every turn?

While that is a good purpose, it only works if you can quiet their disappointed and disproving voices. As long as one is wearing the Ring, that's not something they can do. If the Lucii wish to be heard, they will be heard.

[And he does like to sleep sometimes, Church. He's a Lucis Caelum, after all.]

Fortunately, I am in a rather unique position now in that I'm no longer in possession of the Ring, yet the powers still answer my command.

[Abuse will happen. It's only a matter of time.]

What, you don't even have to wear the stupid thing and can still use its powers? Ardyn's paranoid about the idea of me even thinking of putting his on, which like, that's completely fair even though I still kinda wanna do it out of spite to show him it won't do anything.

Anyway, pretty as it is and great for punching people as it is, the whole thing sounds like way too much trouble.

The Ring is conduit, a way of connecting with the Lucii. Once permission has been granted to wield the power, via blood right or contract, the power remains even if the Ring is passed to another. For example, it's my understanding that Nyx wore the Ring only long enough to make his deal with the Lucii and then passed it to Lady Lunafreya so she could see it safely into my son's possession. Despite handing the Ring off, he was able to use the power until the deal they made was fulfilled.

I'm afraid I've never considered punching people with it. Perhaps, I should have. Doing so certainly would have quieted Aldercapt's prattling during the treaty signing. At least for a little while.

So your contract's not like...fulfilled then? Cuz you're a Lucis Caelum. And because your gods are incredible dicks.

[Regis can't help but laugh at that. Laugh, and not argue one bit.]

That is one way to put it. I am the last who is to join those within the Ring, and none of us will be done with the roles that fate assigned to us until we help Noctis finish cleaning up the mess that was created so long ago.

...Right. Uh. The timelines are pretty weird right now what with people being taken to other universes from their moments of death and shit. So. I dunno what's gonna happen with your world? But the good news is, if anyone ever wants to go back there, there are gonna be, like, a fucking hundred people who are gonna go, too, just to kick Bahamut in the shins until he dies.

Yes, that's something I've been figuring out. It's rather hard to wrap my mind around at times, but it's already proving beneficial, so I will deal with whatever confusion that comes of it.

[After all, were it not for timeline shenanigans, Ardyn wouldn't have had those picture of Noctis to give to him and they are a gift whose value is beyond measure.]

The idea of so many people beating Bahamut into submission is amusing enough to make me consider returning, despite what awaits me. Yet staying here...

[Regis pauses a moment as a question strikes him.]

Do we know what happens back home while we are here? Do things just continue without us?

Fffffar as I know? Things kinda hit a pause button. I think. That was before we started hopping around universes and timelines, and that was also by murdergame tech rules, I dunno. I've stopped worrying about it. I could go back home, but like, ehhhhhh that might screw up shit even more. Better I stay dead in whatever timeline the guys are in. They know I'm alive somewhere else anyway.

[At first, the only response Church gets is a nod of acknowledgment as this is definitely ones of those instances where Regis needs a little more time to wrap his head around what he's been told. It doesn't help that his mind keeps going back and forth between what he wants as a person and his duty as king. Nyx would be able to chose just as easily as Church does to stay. His role in things is done, but Regis' power still needs to be added to that of the rest of the Lucii in order to make the Ring strong enough to allow Noctis to fulfill his task as Chosen King. If he doesn't go back, does it doom the whole world, frozen or not? And yet, with Izunia here as well, is the Ring not already diminished, and what of Ardyn who has come from beyond the end?

Regis sighs and then shoves the jumble of thoughts from his mind, pressing his hand to his temple as he does.]

I think I may have just given myself a headache trying to apply all of that to myself and Eos.
