DUNGEON - BELLMARE ENCLAVE (BELLMARE MOUNTAINS, PT 2)

The shadows are starting to grow very long as you crest his particular ridge - it's not night yet, but it will be soon. In the shadows of the afternoon, with a tall mountain already blocking the sun, lies a snow-covered valley that is different from the ones you've come across thus far in your investigation.

This valley is home to a town, and unlike all the settlements you've seen so far - Incendia, the Telovia mining town, and the manor - it's very much active. There are actual people in the streets, visible from above, going through their days on snow-free streets, bundled up against the cold.

Those of you who asked were told of the handful of people who didn't go into the slumber of stasis as the Fissure conditions of the world grew worse and worse, instead isolating themselves and trying to continue living their lives as they could. Now, it seems, you've found exactly such a group.

Welcome to the Bellmare Enclave, and enjoy your stay.

[[OOC: Welcome to part 2 of the dungeon! For the most part, interaction with the town's NPCs can be handwaved as described on the main information post. Worth noting are the following major things: The Bellmare Enclave isn't expecting visitors, though the people are generally friendly to the new arrivals. They don't know about the time dilation effect of their Fissure - to them, it's only been about eighteen years since the Slumber Plan was put in place and they withdrew from the world. And finally, by a similar token, they have no idea how far the Fissures outside of their own have grown - while it's not uncommon for them to find odd objects from time to time, they'll assume that the characters are just arrivals from other places within their own world, rather than outsiders, until told otherwise.]]

[Oh yeah. He'd forgotten that most people didn't know what the hell he was talking about anymore.]

Oh..uhh. It means 'leader' or ... or 'King'.

[Sorry if you were trying to keep that under wraps, Regis. He does, at least, say that last part a little softer. Respecting that Regis hasn't actually told him anything, but also giving confirmation that he'd pieced things together to know anyway.]

I've never seen a wound heal that fast, but then again, I've never seen someone make an animal out of fire, so I guess it's a day for 'firsts'. Is it magic? Like what you did with the fire and what Nyx did with his arm?

Is that so? I have to say I rather like the sound of the word, though I've always been fond of learning other languages. I'm probably biased.

[Regis is honestly more interested in the word itself than concerned about word of his royal linage getting out. Besides, with Izunia and Ardyn here, it's not like that secret would have stayed that way for long.]

Our bloodline's healing magic works best through different potions which must be created from some kind of drink ahead of time. Izunia had two of the stronger variety that he used on me, and he also had a potion that was created by the medics here specifically to aid someone who had lost a good deal of blood. They made stabilizing me fairly simple, but the sheer complexity of Nyx's wounds made treating him much harder. For example, we couldn't just use a potion on his leg without setting it first or it would have healed wrong. The injury was too severe for us to set it correctly in the field, so it was stabilized as well as it could be until we return.

[And hopefully, Nyx will stop walking on it now, but how likely is that really?]

CW: Body horror? Maybe? Jake being Jake

[Well, at least now he knew that Regis wasn't worried about his status getting out. And while he'd ridden to the cave next to Nyx, it was good to know that the older man also knew that Nyx was alright. Though, something told him that Regis wouldn't have been here if he hadn't known.

And he certainly wouldn't have been laughing so freely. ]

It's less of an entire new language and more just the In-World's version of high speech. Royalty, Gunslingers, people with high status. My father taught me.

Do you really have glammer that can heal wounds that fast and that clean? That's amazing. And...kinda terrifying, actually. What happens if you take one and there's still something inside you? Do you just...grow around it? Like a tree root?

CW: Body horror, continued. I can't think of a better thing to label it as!

Ah, so similar to what we would call 'court speech' back home.

[Regis nods in understanding before turning his attention to the more serious topic at hand, wincing slightly even as he does.]

In a situation where we were unsure if there was something in the wound, a potion wouldn't be administered until we could find out. There is too much risk, plus the wound would need to be reopened later to remove the object. It would be a waste of precious resources and would mean more trauma for the wounded party, just as having to re-break an incorrectly healed bone would be.

CW: Body horror, continued. Just assume this is commonplace for them, guys.

That...sounds horrible, but it makes sense. Digging out fragments isn't fun without having to reopen anything.

[He shuddered a little, and the look on his face was one that had for sure seen such a surgery.]

Unless I'm dying, I think I'd rather do it the long way. Does it itch? Healing itches...

There are ways around the dying part.

[Regis' gaze shifts from Jake out toward the cavern then, though the shift isn't fast enough to hide the paling of his face. It's obvious Jake isn't the only one who has seen his share of unpleasant field medicine.]

One of the most powerful curatives my world has is called Phoenix Down. Much like the mythical creature it is named for--with certain limitations--it can bring those who have died back to life. There are times when it has proven kinder to allow someone to pass before reviving them a short time later.

[For the moment, Jake's question about how the healing feels gets lost under the weight of a much heavier topic.]

[The power to cheat death. It was...well, it was unnerving. Shivers ran over his spine and if Regis cared to pay close enough attention, the little hairs at the nape of his neck and on his arms were standing straight up. A raising of the hackles in a creature that no longer had hackles.

He shook himself out of it with an actual shake, Oy mimicking him.]

Maybe that's what the Tower keeps doing to me? Just...I keep showing up in different places every time.

[The chuckle was forced, but he was trying.]

[Frowning, Regis turns back to Jake just in time to see the shake that rolls over both he and Oy.]

The Tower is what brings you back?

[He had been curious, but it wasn't something one just asked another about. Still a tower is just a building and no mere building can raise the dead, so what makes this one so special?]

Something tells me there is more to this Tower of yours than mortar and bricks.

No. Yes? I...I don't know, honestly.

[At his feet, Oy gave a small whine, shoving his head into the boy's hand. Jake's fingers stroked the velveteen fur, but his look was long, long ago and far, far away.]

The Tower is everything. It is the center of the universe and holds us all in balance. The Beams keep it strong, but the Tower made the Beams. I don't think it was the Tower keeping me alive, but Ka.

I wasn't done yet. I hadn't done my part.

You are likely correct. Fate places far too heavy a burden on its chosen no matter the universe.

[Unconsciously, Regis covers his injured left hand with is right, mind drifting back to the ring that once rested on that hand.]

None of Lucis Caelums who held the throne have been allowed to go to their rest for some two thousand odd years. All because they still have a part to play in Fate's grand plan. Izunia is the eldest of us. It's still difficult for me to comprehend that he is here, let alone what is must have been like to have his spirit housed within the Ring for so long.

[Well, this had gotten deeper than either of them had meant for it to go.

Running his fingers through his hair, Jake glanced back over at the memory replaying itself...and then just smiled.]

Then let us hope that this place is Ka's reward for a job well done and a life well lived.
