What: Baking and eating a belated birthday cake

[ It starts out in the kitchen. Maddie has ingredients spread out on one of the counters; cake ingredients. Flour, eggs, baking powder, salt, sugar, unsalted butter, some freeze-dried strawberries, and a gallon of milk that says "LUKE NO" on the side for some reason. A number of baking pans and utensils are also out.

There's also a large sheet of paper with a lot of raised dots along the surface, and no visible ink or other writing. She runs her hand over the paper. ] All right. I can do this...

[ Feel free to pop in at any point of the baking process. With a cat supervising from the countertop, she slowly follows the instructions she had copied down onto the sheet. Mixing ingredients, baking. It's being made into a large sheet cake because she's not sure how many people will show up.

She makes the frosting while waiting for the baking to finish, then once it's done, it decorate time. Plain white frosting over the cake, the sliced strawberries around the edges, and... ⠼⠁ ⠋ in the center, in strawberry.


After the cake is finished, a mass text goes out over the network. ] Hey guys, I'm sixteen. That means cake in the common room, come by and grab some.

[ Then, separately to Mai and Izunia, ] Hey seriously come by, we need to talk.


[ As promised, the cake is placed in the common room. It's large enough to feed a bunch so help yourself to a slice. Maddie or a helper have brought out enough plates and forks. The cake itself is a bit of a mess, as if made by a blind girl, but it tastes well enough.

The birthday girl herself is sitting on a chair, leaning against one armrest with her legs over the other. She's also got a bowl of strawberry ice cream with her? That's cheating it's not even your cake, Maddie. On the back of the chair is Zel, her cat, eying people as they come in. Maddie offers everybody a wave, assuming she hears them enter. ] Hey! Welcome to the party. Help yourself.

Mhmmm. I tend to favor high places - they're easily accessible by warp, but less so by most foes. Not that I can't take a hit or two, but I'd prefer not to, especially given my aversion to healing magic.

Right. So I have some idea what to do.

Though hopefully we won't need to.

I mean, even if nothing terrible shows up from home, there seem to be monsters in the Fissures. So still good to have a plan.

I haven't run into any of those that I can't handle myself, yet, but it's not impossible.

Well, we can team up on the next big one then.

Sounds like a plan, or at least something to experiment with.

Though I'm afraid you'll also have to put up with Astolfo, since we're rather attached at the hip these days.

[And yes, he's palming the marks on the back of his hand again.]

He's dear to me but I don't think I'd advise letting him in on the secret, he's a bit senseless sometimes.

[ Obviously, Izunia messing with the marks - the marks themselves, even - are completely lost on Maddie. Zel might be beginning to take notice, though. ]

Astolfo... I don't think I've ever met him. The name sounds familiar, though.

Small, extremely energetic, voice in the range that most would call androgynous, hair in a long braid and usually wears a cape.

[Said hair is also pink but that won't help Maddie much at all. At least one person around here actively considers what a blind person would find useful to identify someone?]

He's one of the more social people here, so I imagine it won't be long until you meet him properly.

Small, androgynous... wait, a cape? Seriously?

...I think it looks quite dashing.

[He is maybe a little gay about this, Maddie.]

Even mages don't wear capes because we know it's tacky. And we're basically Superhero Lite. Normal people shouldn't even be in the general vicinity of capes.

He's hardly a normal person. And if you want tacky, my brother likes spats, that's far worse than a cape.

I don't know what spats are and I'm almost afraid to ask.

Fabric ankle coverings that go over the top of shoes and pant legs. Trust me, they're atrocious.

That sounds just as bad, if not worse, than capes.

It's far worse. At least capes are useful for dramatic billowing.

What's the point of dramatic billowing, though? What makes a billowing dramatic, anyway?

[ Maddie doesn't know how cool it looks. She just. Just doesn't know.

The cruelest effect of being blind. ]

...It's a mostly visual effect, I'm afraid. Largely, it's that motion catches the eye, so having things that move in your outfit - such as a cape or coattails that catch in the breeze - draws attention and looks impressive.

Oh. So like my mage outfit's skirt and the long ends of the blindfold? Do those look impressive?

They look rather nice, yes.
