DUNGEON LOG: KEYSTONE REEF
Expedition day dawns, as usual, with an android mass text -
Okay, so, this time we're aiming to go out and stabilize the Fissure in the reef you can see up a little to the north of here. The waters are usually pretty calm this time of year, so if you can swim instead of needing to take a boat, that'd be a great help. We only have a few of them.
Also, I know that last time was a mess, so I'm just gonna say this: If you need to get out for any reason, just send us a message and a picture of your location. We'll get a drone out to you as soon as we can and bring you home. No questions asked.
( ゚▽゚)/ Stay safe out there! When you're ready to go, meet us down at the beach. The rocky, sparkly one, not the sandy one.
Unlike previous expeditions, this time there's no rooftop sendoff - instead, as Charm noted, the tables are set up on Glitterstone beach, along with a series of boats pulled up on the sand. Two rowboats that could maybe sit six people but probably better suited for four, a trio of inflatable rafts (with motors attached to the back, all mismatched) of about the same size, a two-person dinghy and a long canoe that could hold two or three.
Besides the little fleet, there's also the usual bagged lunches (in gallon ziplocs this time, and other such watertight containers), and every boat is equipped with a large number of those chepa dollar-store water bottles, all with their airtight store seals. There's also a selection of life vests and other floatation thingies in a box next to the table. Strange hovers over the setup, checking watertightness of a handful of first aid kits with a spritzer and a bucket to submerge things in. They give a little wave to anyone passing by headed to the boats.
For those who opt instead to swim, everything seems perfectly normal until you reach the border of the Fissure... When, very suddenly, it isn't.

[Glitterstone Beach, closed to Yuuri: Junpei's a good enough swimmer that he doesn't need to use a boat. On the other hand, it's a beautiful, sunny day, there's a two-person dinghy just sitting there on the shore, and his beautiful fiancée is beautiful, and his fiancée. He offers her an elbow, grinning.]
Shall we, ojou-san? I'll row, of course.
[Shallows, open: Once they've enjoyed a lovely morning
slacking off and flirtingmonitoring the situation above the waves, Junpei kisses Yuuri's forehead and hops from one of the outcroppings into the water. Immediately, fur ripples down his back and body; he yelps and resurfaces, spluttering saltwater.]What the hell?!
[Someone is now a 5'8" sea otter gijinka. Buoy oh buoy.]
B. He's a SEA POTTER
[Desert island sandbar, open: Junpei adapts fast, and, after swimming back and forth across the border of a stabilized area to ensure the effects aren't permanent, he enjoys his quick-diving, web-footed new form. Even like this, though, he can't hold his breath forever, and there's plenty to explore ashore, too.
Like this weird pot, for instance. It's got crescent moons on it, and when Junpei tried to take it back to Yuuri for investigation, it fucking disappeared on him. So he's poking at it now, pawing at the outside and sniffing and--maybe--licking it once. Just for science.
It's the way light doesn't seem to penetrate inside that intrigues him. He almost reaches a paw within, but something makes him pause. The dawning of common sense, perhaps?
So he trundles four-legged up the sand to find a broken-off piece of palm bark, returns to the pot, and sticks that inside instead.]
Whoa!
[OM NOM NOM NOM.]
C. This is a Tri-vesty
[The Trivesta, open: It's an uncharacteristically quiet and somber Junpei who goes exploring the wrecked Trivesta. He stays low to the floor, more comfortable walking on his four legs than two, but he can still reach up to open doors and paw at all the rusted, useless junk inside. He ends up spending some time curled up in that large, inexplicably empty nest up top, listening to the seabirds call and fiddling with his pendant.
When he leaves, the ghost jellies seem particularly invested. He shoves at them and even tries to slap a couple aside with his tail, testy and apparently unmoved by their feelings.]
Stop that, damn it. Stay in your own heads, I've had enough of that shit. Move.
D. Au Clair de la Rune
[Coral Graveyard, open: Of course the weird stone ship is the one that draws Junpei's attention. Those runes might not be active anymore, but the only way this thing could've gotten here is if they once had been, and they worked.
Junpei can hold his breath about half an hour, so for hours, he's diving, coming up, and diving again, exploring the ship from bow to aft and taking pictures with his waterproofed tablet. He does his best to avoid the spider-crab webs, but luckily, he picked up a sharp rock to help cut himself free when he misjudges. From time to time, he takes a break topside, floating on his back while he goes through his photos, intrigued.
And every now and then, he can be caught napping like that, just bobbing on his back like a big, furry buoy. But is that a playful shadow eyeing his tail...?]

Inconvenient?

The monsters here... Dangerous. Is there air for you nearby?

I can hold my breath for about twenty more minutes too, I'm good. Thanks for the help, these things are obnoxious. Who the fuck waterproofed spiders?
no subject
Unsure. They look like crab-san. Edible, maybe. I wonder. Where all of these came from. What kind of world.

[Junpei thinks about it, looking around at the boat he's currently investigating, and then sends a second text:]
There must be a connection. We only turned up in a fissure when someone was there to pick us up; these boats ended up in a fissure in the ocean. They can't all be from this world.
no subject
Aquatic monsters. Shipwrecks. In an ocean. But us in a dream forest? The pattern breaks. If it had been space, or a mansion, or a computer, that would make sense. But it wasn't.

But when the actual day rolls around and it's such a bright, sunny one and it's so hot and the breeze is so nice... well, it's a little hard to hold onto that cynicism. She's even dressed herself in that nice swishy sundress for the occasion. ]
When you put it like that, how could I say no?
[ She takes his arm with a smile. Maybe this won't be an unparalleled disaster. ]
no subject
Here you are.
[He pushes the boat most of the rest of the way into the water--still technically in the stable area of Glitterstone, so no shenanigans yet--hops in himself, and pushes off with an oar. Away they go.]
Don't plan on swimming today, huh? [Junpei himself is in swim trunks and a T-shirt.] Boooo.
no subject
If we were staying in the shallows, maybe. But I'm not a good enough swimmer to chance it while we're all the way out to sea.
[ She gives him a little grin and then lifts the sides of her skirt a little, like she's giving a curtsey from where she's sat. ]
Besides, the last thing I want to do is get this nice dress soaked.

[He's not really worried about it, though. Off they go, with Junpei cheerfully rowing.
It's honestly almost like he's been more upbeat since they arrived than back home in Japan; it's not that he's happier, necessarily, and he was definitely keyed up in their first couple weeks, but for a while now, his energy's just been higher. Like he's more engaged. More alive.]
Think we'll find somewhere to stop for a picnic, just the two of us? Or everyone else, too, if we can find them. It's hot enough I think most of us want to swim.

[ Slowly, so as not to upset their balance, Yuuri stands up and carefully shields her eyes against the sun. It takes a moment for her to be able to see much of anything through the light and the haze, but eventually things swim back into focus. ]
There's some dry spots of sand that look safe enough. [ she gestures in the direction of a wide, flat sandbar that doesn't look like it's seen any tide in a while. the sand's almost bone white, like it's been bleached by the sun. ] I don't think there's any shade, but I'm sure we'll find something in the Armiger to fix that.
[ She doesn't sit down right away. Instead, she watches him for a moment, her smile still warm and then tilts her head. ]
It's nice to get away from the Station, isn't it? Being cooped up like that doesn't really suit you.
D, boat
At least he's easy to tell apart from Ardyn even without his scarf, due to the differences in tattoos. Junpei gets a glance up and a little wave, but he's quite focused on this part of the wreck, at least for the time being.]
no subject
What've you got?
[Curiosity > the Family Feud.]
no subject
Not overly much. It's a different system than what this world uses - it's got a more elaborate hexagonal base.
[With a wave of his hand, he highlights the way the hexagrid is laid out over top of the nearest handful of hand-spread-sized runes, using his own blue light.]

[The lights change to outline the kind of runes found on a haven, a series of barely-connected, glowing blue circles.]
Some of the old Solheim facilities had magitek ones in red, but you'd do better asking Ardyn about them than me.
D
Junpei? Sorry to wake you, but....
no subject
[His cute li'l otter whiskers twitch as Junpei wakes and blinks at Soma, and then he shakes his hair out like a dog. He sounds like Noctis as he yawns.]
Soma? What's up?
[He doesn't afraid of teeth. He doesn't afraid of anything.]
B
What's with the pot?
no subject
[He waves her over and points at its mouth.]
It ate my stick!
no subject
[Wandering over to look closer at it.]
That thing's probably cursed. I'd leave it alone if I were you.
c
Persistent, aren't they?
[The ghost jellies swarm towards the light source, a woman in a lightweight white armor with golden, glowing wings, which she has switched on to both light her way and distract the jellies from her companions. They hover to either side of her spread wings, but don't get close enough to effect her. You're welcome.]
no subject
No kidding. Thanks for the light, Miss...? Wait, no. You're the doctor, aren't you? Doctor Ziegler? Do I have that right?
[He's sure he does, but not everyone makes a dossier on everyone else in these situations.]
Junpei Tenmyouji.
