Who knows what’s right? The lines keep getting thinner

Who: Shido Masayoshi and whatever unfortunate soul decides to approach him (Open)
What: Shido is working himself to the bone via self-inflicted punishment
When: Early May (like 5/1 ~ 5/12 or thereabouts)
Where: Various
Warnings: Lots of badbrain stuff going on with Shido rn, including self-deprecation, possible thoughts of suicide

[Library]
[Off in the corner sits a man, pouring over a manner of books. The more the days go by, the more that energy and health is sapped from him. The bags under his eyes have been persistent since day one of arriving here, but the noticeable changes are that he does seem to be losing some weight, and perhaps becoming a bit pallid... Yet a fire burns behind his eyes as he reads at the library like clockwork, occasionally extending a hand, fingers tensing, trying to press themselves down on some invisible object. Very occasionally, if one just happens to be around at the right time of day, they might hear a singular "pop" of air in his direction. It's also possible, at times, to find him completely slumped over on the table he's at, asleep, often grunting and twitching in his sleep— it's clearly not very restful...

On a brighter now, later on in the week you might see a henohenomoheji drawn on the back of Shido's head? He doesn't seem to be aware of this...]

[Library - 5/7 (Closed to Izunia)]
[There's more than just a pop today. Today? There's an outright crackle and snap of electricity.

Followed by an agonized yell and the clatter of a chair.

Shido lays on the floor, breathing heavily, one arm desperately clutching at the other that spasms from the surge of electricity that had torn through it. And then something peculiar happens.

Shido laughs. An unsteady sort of laugh, but nevertheless.

Maybe he electrocuted himself so badly he fried his brain...]

[Outside]
[If you get extra lucky, you might catch Shido outside. Particularly, the spot he chooses to go is north, to the top of the Skyclimb Cliffs, where he looks out to the ocean. It seems, well... somewhat of a precarious place for someone to be, really. He seems to be awfully close to the edge at times, no sign of fear or wariness in his body. You might catch him looking down, as if considering something, but for the most part? His gaze remains on the endless blue.

And then, after about thirty minutes of this, he'll quietly turn and head back.]

...yeah, remember when I said a lot of us were in alternate universes before this one?

[ She doesn't know too many details about Goro's CRAU adventures, but she supposes someone could fill Shido in. ]

Found out from him that he was with my dad in one, and Dad... adopted him? Which is cool, he kinda recognized me after I fucked up the first time we met. I mean, it took a while, but.

Wasn't really too hard? I don't exactly have the most common surname in the multiverse for some reason, and I always looked more like my dad, anyway, so, y'know.

[She does some jazz hands:]

~Ace detective~

[Okay, she's gonna stop that little flourish in her voice and go back to normal.]

So yeah, now it's ride or die. Because that's what you do for your brother.

[Yeah, you do that, buddy, meanwhile Izunia will be over here, passive-aggressively setting up his lunch.]

And who does working like that help?

[There's no clock in the room, but Angela takes a clue from the fading daylight filtering in through the windows.]

Late afternoon, early evening.

[She withdraws her hand, gesturing to the table and the things she's brought over just to bring his attention to them.]

I will be forward with you. You have gotten thinner and paler recently, by an unhealthy margin. Are you feeling unwell?
foolishjustice: (Maybe it's not so bad...)

Then it doesn't matter if you consciously know what you're thinking is false, even focusing on thought you want to believe rather than the truth can influence a Palace?

[Here comes another first: a hint of genuine, enthusiastic excitement in his voice. Even his eyes are lit up with interest...seems you've found one of his passions?]

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, it's not really that different on a theoretical level from how things like my inventory work. As long as it's a common idea in the public consciousness, it's possible while I'm in the Metaverse...I just have to be able to think to try it, with enough confidence to convince either myself or whatever I'm acting on to believe it should work.

Is this about that whole debacle earlier this month?

[ For what it's worth, she probably never had too many plans to actually stab Yoshi, and she has other things on her mind right now. She takes her sword and thrusts it into the clam's maw, now propped open by the rock.

For most swords, a straight blade would probably be super hard to pull out and sound like nails on a chalkboard against this giant clam. Traditional Miari blades, on the other hand, are all wiggly with little shark teeth serrated edges near the hilt so you can fuck shit right up. So she repeats this a few times, bracing herself for cover when it unleashes another attack. The sword is still stuck in the clam, sticking out between its shells.

...after that's done, she needs her sword back, but that clam also looks mighty pissed. She's going to think for a split second about what can-

oh shit the durian maybe she can repulse the clam enough to force it to do a thing

Welp, she'll make a beeline for that, when she sees Shido. ]

What?!

[ Even if you're safe enough to be out of range of the electricity, this still isn't the safest place for a noncombatant, which is what Tali thinks you are. ]

Yeah, from what I was told it just sorta happened.

[Welp, if he's leaving, she'll stand back, leaning her cane against the wall so he doesn't trip. She's not that mean.]

Have fun, Yoshi.

...Just what are you trying to do, exactly?

[ She'd heard the noise and realized it'd been coming from here, peering around the nearest shelf to look at him and now she was hesitating. A part of her didn't wanna be here but yet, something else made her stay and so she didn't back off. Even coming a bit closer to him to try and get a better look, but it was clear she was wary about him at the moment. ]

Also has anyone said you look like you're related to death himself?

What would ever give you that idea?

[Cheerful smile! And setting a can of soda on the table, followed by a small platter of cheese and veggies. Monch.]

I guess someone your age wouldn't know, even if you weren't more allergic to wastes of time than Sae-san.

There's a common mechanic in video games where the player character can carry much more than the character model would indicate is possible. I think it's also common in the more gag-oriented cartoons, but I don't really watch many of those. Anyway, they introduced the concept of a disproportionately large carrying capacity into the public consciousness on enough of a scale to affect the Metaverse.
superstylishsquid: (Oh yeah...)

[personal profile] superstylishsquid 2018-05-25 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[...Yeah no. He snaps his fingers, and all the ambient electricity in the room flows into his hand, leaving it shimmering with blue and white sparks for a moment.]

Right, lemme take a guess based on what I saw: you were a villain back home, and a really nasty one at that. Then a bunch of kids kick started your conscience somehow and you feel terrible about it, but you're too stuck dwelling on what you've done wrong to move forward. So, instead, you just sit here, half-killing yourself trying to learn magic that might fry your brain if you make an exhausted mistake because if you die, it might as well be trying to learn something useful.

How close am I?

I see...I'd known that destroying the Shadow caused the Palace to collapse. I guess it stands to reason that stopping the heart would have a similar effect...I wonder if that would be another reason I'm incapable of having a Palace, or if the important part is having a presence in the RG? Given the Metaverse is based in the consciousness of the people who exist in the physical world, it doesn't seem unreasonable to think that the important part is having your mind present on that layer of reality...
